N.C. School of Science, Math Collects Nearly 560,000 Pounds of Food in One Day
Cary, N.C. – March 17, 2011 – Earlier this month, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) collected nearly 560,000 pounds of food in one day thanks to an army of volunteers, including Beverly Murray, president of R+M and alumna of NCSSM’s first graduating class, the Class of 1982. Murray was part of the school’s Alumni Leadership Committee, which helped organize and promote the March 5 event on the school’s Durham campus. Documentation will be submitted to Guinness World Records later this month to confirm the record-breaking event.
“We asked Bev to be a part of the Alumni Leadership Committee so that we could access her marketing brain and alumnus heart — a powerful combination,” shared Sue Anne Lewis, student life instructor at the school and food drive coordinator.
The Alumni Leadership Committee played an integral role in the food drive’s success as members helped with everything from media relations and sponsorship support, to student outreach facilitation and event planning. The event included sponsors such as Wal-Mart, Chick-fil-A, Pharmaceutical Product Development, Inc., and Wells Fargo, among others, that wanted to raise awareness of food insecurity in our state, and stock the warehouses of the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
“I’m incredibly proud of my alma mater as everyone came together to highlight the hunger that hides right here at home,” shared Beverly Murray. “And I love the fact that NCSSM isn’t afraid to try the impossible. It’s that kind of thinking that inspires thoughtful change.”
“The school not only fosters innovation in its students, but also a lifetime of giving back,” said NCSSM Chancellor Todd Roberts, Ed.D., “so it’s not surprising that our alumni turned out in force. It really puts an exclamation point on our commitment to deliver value outside of our doors.”

About NCSSM
The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) opened in 1980 as the first school of its kind—a public, residential high school where students study a specialized curriculum emphasizing science and mathematics. This approach was built on the premise that regions which invest in the creation of human and intellectual capital will receive global economic returns, the key to success in a worldwide economy. NCSSM has since become the model for 18 like-schools around the globe and has helped found the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology (NCSSSMST), which now counts more than 100 member institutions across the country. NCSSM’s statewide impact has remained unparalleled by any other North Carolina high school. With admission to its residential program apportioned by Congressional District, combined with its distance education, extended programs and professional development efforts across North Carolina, NCSSM touches nearly every N.C. County every year. The early vision of our state’s leaders has matured into a vital institution that models and advocates excellence in K-12 education and is integral to the pursuit of the strategic economic and quality-of-life objectives so important to North Carolinians and to our nation and world.
